1/42 — Our Magna Carta for Building in Public
Forty‑two days until General Release.
Open sign‑ups. A free trial for everyone. From there, we earn trust the hard way—by shipping useful things, fast.
‍
Building in public
There’s no single “right” way to build. We’ve tried a few. For two years we’ve explored, interviewed, shipped, scrapped, and learned. The first 18 months felt like throwing ideas at the wall. The pattern that stuck was simple:
Home electrification is e‑commerce without e‑commerce standards.
Plans, solar, batteries, inverters, and appliances live in a fragmented, opaque marketplace. Data is messy. Pricing is unclear. Workflows are 10 years behind.
That mess is our opportunity.
‍
The thesis
If we standardise the pipeline—from data sources → product/plan curation → consumer decisions → verified installation—then transparency and competition do the rest. Better options show up. Prices sharpen. More households move towards independence.
Australia is already primed: rooftop solar passed four million systems by late 2024 (about one in three homes), and rooftop solar generated 12.4% of all electricity in 2024. Home batteries are rising fast too—~75,000 sold in 2024 alone.
At the same time, the Consumer Data Right (CDR) is active in energy, laying rails for secure data sharing and switching. That’s a lever we can pull—responsibly.
‍
General Release
- Open to everyone: no invite codes.
- Free trial: start using the product the day you sign up.
- Hands‑on value from day one: connect your data, run an AI Home Analysis, compare plans/products, save quotes, and track your electrification path.
What we’re actually building (B2B2C, end‑to‑end)
From source to customer—one pipeline:
- Energy Plan PIM/API
Curated, validated plan data that channels and partners can trust. - Consumer Portal
Search → Discover → Compare → Save a Quote → Track status. Clean, fast, and transparent. - AI Home Analysis
Bills + address + roof snapshot → an actionable plan: the right solar/battery/appliance mix for your budget and goals. - Partner Rails
Installers and channel partners get structured leads, status updates, and proofs. Less back‑and‑forth, more done.
We’re rebuilding the app around this B2B2C backbone so partners scale distribution while households keep control.
‍
“Geek Economy”
We’re opening the doors for builders, installers, analysts, and energy nerds to become partners. Think:
- APIs + SDKs to launch niche comparison tools, calculators, and dashboards.
- Data services to enrich catalogs and compliance checks.
- Go‑to‑market rails so trusted agents can promote what works—and share in the value they create.
Our way of working (and reporting)
- Every 3–4 days: a public update that distils weekly stand‑ups, code reviews, and tangible product progress. Screenshots, PRs, or short demos—no fluff.
- Probabilistic, not deterministic: we’ll be wrong, often quickly; we’ll correct, openly.
- Long‑term bias: we’re patient enough to build a 100‑year company, and urgent enough to ship this week.
Principles (that keep us honest)
- Customer first: if it doesn’t help a household or a partner win, it doesn’t ship.
- Transparency by default: how we rank, why we recommend, what incentives exist.
- Security & consent: CDR‑grade data handling; clear permissions; no dark patterns.
- Competition is good: clearer information → sharper offers → better outcomes for everyone.
The next 42 days
This is a countdown, not a teaser campaign. Each post should feel like progress you can touch—components becoming flows, flows becoming outcomes. On Day 42, doors open. You’ll register, try it, and tell us where to improve.
Stay tuned.
