You’ve survived the history, decoded the rebates, and even made your EV the block’s new superhero. But how do you actually build the ultimate “energy hero” home—the one that never misses a beat (or a BBQ), saves you a small fortune, and is always future-ready?
Step 1: Get the Order Right (No FOMO Later)
1. Start with Solar (but think ahead)
- Go bigger if you can (6.6kW–10kW is the new “standard”—future EVs & batteries will thank you)
- Choose a battery-ready inverter (hybrid or “battery compatible”)
- Ask for a layout that leaves roof space for future panels—don’t box yourself in!
2. Add a Battery (when rebates or your bills make it a no-brainer)
- Pick a system with a good warranty (at least 10 years)
- Make sure it’s VPP-capable (future money hack!)
- Double-check it plays nice with your inverter and panels—mixed brands can be tricky
3. Plan for EV Charging
- Get an EV charger that’s “bidirectional-ready” if possible (V2H/V2G support)
- Check your home’s switchboard size—might need an upgrade
- For renters: ask your landlord about future-proofing for an EV socket now
4. Join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)
- Sign up when it’s a good fit—your battery can earn you $$ or bonus credits for helping the grid
- Compare VPP offers—some pay per event, others give monthly credits or upfront bonuses
- Use the VoltaRocks app to see which VPPs are live in your postcode
“Big Regrets” List (aka How to Avoid Rookie Mistakes)
- Regret #1: “I went for a cheap inverter and now can’t add a battery!”
Solution: Pay the small premium for a battery/hybrid inverter up front.
- Regret #2: “My system isn’t VPP-ready and I’m missing out on hundreds a year.”
Solution: Always ask for VPP-capable hardware. (If your installer says “what’s a VPP?”, call someone else.)
- Regret #3: “I maxed out my roof with panels and can’t add more for my future EV.”
Solution: Get a future-friendly design, not just “fill every inch.”
- Regret #4: “My charger only works one way!”
Solution: Ask if your EV charger is ready for V2H/V2G, or easily upgradable when your next car arrives.
- Regret #5: “My brands don’t play together. It’s like tech Hunger Games.”
Solution: Where possible, pick brands known for great integration or stick to the same ecosystem (or double-check compatibility in the VoltaRocks Articles).
The No-Drama Futureproofing Checklist
- Hybrid inverter, or “battery-ready” solar system
- VPP-capable battery (not all are!)
- Smart, upgradeable EV charger
- Room on your roof for more panels (future EV or electrified home)
- VoltaRocks app/account set up—so you can track, compare, and optimise every step
How It All Connects (and Pays Off)
With the full “energy hero” stack, here’s what your home can do:
- Use more of your own solar, less from the grid
- Store energy for nights, blackouts, or when prices spike
- Charge your EV for pennies, or sell power back to the grid during peak (V2G)
- Earn from VPPs and never miss a rebate or tariff change
- See and control it all—anywhere, anytime—with the VoltaRocks app
